Rinse Relax Revive is a photograph of a sculpture, which was created as a response to an old tanning shop closing down and left empty for months. The shop became a place in flux, with its lurid pink walls and old spray tan paint splashed across its surfaces. It became a space on the threshold of transition.

This ‘painting’ ties a link between the daily acts we religiously perform and tribal ceremonies. The way we present ourselves is often a display of our personalities, but can simultaneously be a mask of our true identity. In ancient ceremonies it is traditional to strip the subject of their possessions and clothes, leaving them naked as at birth, and covered in mud as in burial.

The subject’s unnatural toxic colours play against the traditional tribal elements. Over exaggerated beauty aesthetics allude to superficiality, yet the subject’s closed eyes and still presence evoke a meditative state of self-reflection.
