Concrete, ink, wire, wooden frame

Artwork to be shipped from UK (and it's not as heavy as you would think!)

Curator's Statement:

For Joely Neilan, experimentation could be as simple as having the physical space to allow her to make larger sculptures and to continue to explore “textures and the relationships between the materials I use”. Her studio, somewhere, half a century away is a place free of restriction, where she can create larger works and try out different materials. Her bold sculptural paintings, fashioned out of concrete, plaster, ink and spray paint, feel like the urban landscape that surrounds us. Her materials are from our immediate external environment; even down to the discarded single use plastic that forms part of her pieces.

Artist Statement:

I focus on textures and the relationships between the materials I use - I am interested in geology combined with the permanence of manmade materials and I use a lot of single-use plastic within my work to create different surface textures. When I create my artwork I am in, what I call, my happy place. I find the process of making my work very therapeutic and I find it very grounding.

The dream is to continue investing time into my artwork and explore my ideas. I would love to one day have my own studio space where I am not specially restricted & have the freedom to create larger works and experiment & explore more materials (maybe metal work or resin) to take my sculptures further. I want people to look at my work and wonder how it was made.

Joely Neilan, b. 1996, lives and works in Kettering, UK
