"Not every obstacle has to hold you up. The hurdle can also be colourful!" - Oliver Schwarzwald
About the artist:
Oliver Schwarzwald is a storyteller, telling tales through his images. These could be inspired by many things - experiences, memories, important and less important observations - and are expressed through a variety of techniques. As he himself says: "different messages need different executions". Born in Gdansk, and now resident in Hamburg, his often fantastical and surreal tales are composed with a precise and meticulous attention to detail - and particularly to the lighting of the image. Oliver's work Hurdle was exhibited at the Courtauld Institute of Art's prestigious East Wing Biennial throughout 2016 and his series Animals vs Jewellery won first runner-up in the World Photography Awards Professional: Still-Life category.
Doing nothing is an important source of inspiration for me. Only when one has a long period of contemplation and silence does the head begin to churn out ideas, almost involuntarily. Many of my 'visual stories' come to me while on holiday, while walking, running or riding my bicycle. Or, to be more precise, when I am passing by. I wish I had more time for such moments of creation.
