The Artist's Statement

Intersections is a photography-based exploration that captures the state of awareness the momentary instance we snap out of a daydream. When we daydream we are unaware of what we are looking at, and we could be staring at something but not necessarily looking at it. This work is an attempt at capturing this occurrence, something that is rather impossible to photograph because it happens unknowingly for a very brief moment.

Daydreams function as disruptions to our daily lives, and in these disruptions we seek a new realm, a fabricated world that defies the systematic order of our reality. Perhaps the fact that we subconsciously gravitate towards such a behaviour is evidence in itself that daydreams are a condition for sanity.

The Process

Constantly finding myself in a state of daydream, I became increasingly aware each time I snapped back into reality. When this happens, I would very consciously try to freeze and prolong that particular moment and photograph it. If I am lucky I would have a proper camera with me on hand at that instance, and if not, I would make a snapshot of that moment with my mobile phone to capture its gist and spontaneity, and recreate the image after.

The Biography

Genevieve Leong (b. 1992, Singapore) completed her BA Fine Art (Photography & Digital Imaging) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Genevieve is a visual artist whose practice attempts to visualise what we cannot see. She is often intrigued by emotions that come in quietness and how that transforms common places into unfamiliar spaces. Photography is often the starting point of her work, and the images that she creates then becomes a trigger point for the work to morph into other mediums.

Genevieve is currently working on an upcoming group exhibition ‘New Margins’ (2018) organised by THEBOOKSHOW, Singapore. She has participated in group exhibitions and festivals including ‘Noise Singapore 2016 Alumni Exhibition’ (2016), Esplanade Concourse, Singapore, ‘Undescribed’ (2016), DECK, Singapore, ‘Pingyao International Photography Festival’ (2014), Pingyao Ancient City, Pingyao, China, and ‘Noise Singapore 2014 Festival’ (2014), Singapore Art Museum, Singapore.
