Might Pop I Bee Chee Chang

£543.00

School of Fine Art, Contemporary Art Practice, Public Sphere

Bee Chee Chang’s artistic practice spans many media including photography, sculpture and moving image. In her BA in Media and Communication Studies at Goldsmiths University, she began to explore the concept of an art student pursuing his or her career regardless of circumstances. She created a series of self portraits to represent the frustration and doubt that occurred whenever she imagined her future career, subsequently winning the Jim Rowland Prize.

Through her MA at the RCA, her practice has begun to explore the role of art in society; by valuing different subjectivities and being a site of discussion. Returning to themes she has previously explored, such as her interior examination of the art student’s future career, she seeks to find her own answers to the eternal discussion of art and its influences.

On "Might Pop"

“Might Pop is from a series of images that are inspired by my own self-doubt. The arrangement of objects within this image invites spectators to a moment of strange tension and conveys the anxiety that I have to confront whenever I imagine myself as an artist. Through this anxiety, I deliver a suggestion to myself and to other art students that one should be brave enough to stay vulnerable within the world in order to fully become an artist, because an artist is someone who reflects the world through his or her subjectivity and creativity.”
