Artist Statement:

The following works are all the results of moments of material play and experimentation in my studio over the past year and a half. What has motivated them all is my lifelong fascination with patterns. I seek to capture and transform the patterns found in precious household textiles through painting and sculpture, using stencils, rubbings, and casting.

A lot can be learned in the space between certainty and uncertainty. I think of the studio as a space that sits between the two, a vulnerable and experimental space. As a younger emerging artist, I often feel pressured to make work that is only “good” and “productive”. Something I admire about older artists is their willingness to surrender control and be fully present in their process, not the outcome. They continue to have a love affair with their materials, constantly learning new things about them. The work I hope to be making half a century from now is work that is still part of a love affair with my materials. Work that is characterised by curiosity, without traces of fear or apprehension. Work that is unapologetic, unafraid to be fast, messy, or incomplete. I think of the art I make now as imperfect offerings towards this future. I am getting closer to it every day.

Alessandra Pozzuoli, b. 1995, lives and works in Ontario, Canada.
