42cm x 36cm

Oil, Charcoal and Collage on Paper

Artwork will be shipped from Spain.

Curator's Statement:

Paula Blanco has created a landscape of the body. Her work is immersive and tactile. Like so many of the selected artists, Paula cannot separate her art from her life, her practice “intrinsically linked to my person”. She poses the question “today it reflects strength and youth, but what will happen when I grow old?”. We have the sensation of old age in her series of collages, but we can also see it in a quite literal fashion: the layers of oil paint, charcoal, spray paint and vegetable paper strongly suggestive of human flesh and blood. In her own words “fine and wrinkled, delicate, it will be as if, at last, I have managed to merge with the world”.

Artist Statement:

I imagine growing old with my work. No matter where, maybe I’ll go through several studios until I end up painting at home, in a little corner next to the window. I don't really care, because the only thing I imagine when thinking about my painting and my career until the end of my days is to mutate together; always trying to apprehend the organicity of the body by twisting it, mutating it until we are left only with being, with life. Being intrinsically linked to my person, today it reflects strength and youth, but what will happen when I grow old? I like to think that it will do it with me, that the explosion of life of youth will give way to a more leisurely work, with more layers, but no less powerful. The explosion of the interspersed glazes will give way to the superimposition of transparencies of the vegetable paper that, governed by collage, will be interwoven with charcoal and lax movement of the flesh. Fine and wrinkled, delicate, it will be as if, at last, iI have managed to merge with the world.

Paula Blanco, b. 1996, lives and works in Oviedo, Spain
